About a year ago, one of our model collectors who also has an extensive real classic car collection called me and asked me if we ever thought about making a scaled model of a Duesenberg engine. I said I had never really thought about it but he was in the middle of restoring one of his Duesenbergs and the engine had been pulled out. I jumped at the chance to have total 360 degree access of a Duesy motor sitting freely on an engine stand and the rest is history. Duesenbergs are rare birds to begin with so to have access to one with the engine removed and 100% accessible is almost unheard of. The only other option is to work from prints or climb over fenders, firewalls and grills which no owner would ever allow.
You may be interested to know that ALL of the 481 engine blocks were produced by Lycoming Engines in one batch in 1929. If you owned one of the last Duesenbergs in 1938, it had a 1929 engine. Of course the depression played its part in more engine blocks not being needed but so did Duesenberg Motor’s optimism of what they thought there initial engine needs would be. Of the 481 engines built by Lycoming, 446 were non-supercharged and 35 were supercharged. We have created the non-supercharge version in 1:4 scale.
Each version of this model is strictly limited to an issue of 175 serial numbered units.
